With hosts United Way Bay Area and the Bar Association of San Francisco, we watched and discussed the film "Beyond the Bridge", opening up the conversation to why Housing First works.
We had a great time at the hscreening and discussion of the documentary “Beyond the Bridge.” Swords’ Executive Director Tramecia Garner brought the veteran perspective to the panel which dissected the Housing First model to end homelessness.
If you didn’t know, the VA has seen great progress with Housing First, which pairs permanent housing with tailored supportive services for residents transitioning out of homelessness. Since 2010, after the expansion of HUD-VASH vouchers, there’s been a 56% national decrease in homelessness among veterans. Swords to Plowshares manages 6 sites in San Francisco which run this approach in partnership with the VA - we hold a 95% retention rate of residents remaining stably housed.
This work depends on patience, collaboration, and proper funding. The HUD-VASH approach could be replicated with other federal departments to help other populations, but the federal government can’t do it alone. “Beyond the Bridge” demonstrates that everyone needs to be on the same team: state, city, and private funders also have to be on board. Homelessness won’t be solved when the people who care the most can’t agree on a solution. Last night, we and so many other San Francisco organizations agreed our city - a place where Housing First started - can’t go backwards.
