Community and Peer-Based Support Shape Wellness

We saw veterans engage with helpful resources during our recent East Bay Wellness Week.

At Swords to Plowshares, we know that wellness is about far more than making appointments. For many veterans, true wellness begins with connection — sharing a meal, joining a conversation, learning something new, and finding community alongside other veterans who understand their experiences.

That spirit was on full display during Swords to Plowshares’ recent East Bay Wellness Week, a multi-day series of workshops, activities, and community gatherings designed to support veterans across every aspect of wellness: mental, physical, financial, social, and even digital.

Throughout the week, veterans had access to a variety of services all in one place — such as spending quality time with service dogs (thanks to Paws for Purple Hearts) and connecting to comprehensive multicultural supportive services (thanks to La Familia).

One standout moment from the week was a digital literacy class organized by the Health & Human Resource Education Center (HHREC), designed to help build confidence using smart phones and other everyday technologies. Participants learned practical skills that can help them stay connected to healthcare, employment opportunities, housing resources, benefits systems, and loved ones.

At the conclusion of the class, veterans also received laptops to continue practicing and applying what they learned at home!

When veterans build relationships with peers in these settings, they are more likely to stay engaged, try new experiences, and remain connected to supportive services. A conversation over coffee can lead to a support group. A workshop can spark a new interest. A shared experience can become the beginning of renewed confidence and stability.

We believe that healing and wellness happen in community. East Bay Wellness Week was a reminder that when veterans are surrounded by support, encouragement, and meaningful connection, they are empowered not only to care for themselves but to continue learning and growing.
