Observing Juneteenth

Veterans across our housing sites shared a meal in honor of the holiday, celebrating freedom and community.

Across Swords to Plowshares' six housing sites, shared meals are common programs. They get veterans out of their apartments with the promise of free food - an important resource, especially in today's economy. Shared meals gain a deeper impact when they are organized in recognition for a holiday or community.

Recently, we celebrated Juneteenth in our residential programs. A federal observance commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, it's also a day to reflect on what freedom means. For many veterans in our community, upholding freedom was a reason to join the military. That perspective makes honoring Juneteenth, and educating people on the reason for the holiday, all the more important at Swords to Plowshares.

The menu featured traditional Black American cuisine: braised oxtail, red rice and beans, and chicken wings - a real treat for residents. Cooked by residential programs staff, the food is a key component to fostering a sense of community.

Mikal serves up a plate at Veterans Commons, our site in SoMa.

"This is a moment for them to pause and enjoy the day," says Mikal Jones, staff for Swords' residential programs. "It's important to build moments like these for the veterans, some get to learn about what Juneteenth is and others feel affirmed in their place here."
