The non-clinical approach to mental healthcare brings veterans a heartwarming way to heal.
Every Friday, a group of veterans leaves San Francisco behind and heads north to Rock Rose Ranch in Marin County. For a few hours, the hustle and bustle, to-do lists and appointments wait. What's left is open land, good company, and a herd of horses who seem to know exactly who needs them.
Kembolyn (U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard) is one of the regulars.
"Equine therapy is awesome, I try to go every Friday. The horses are so empathetic. I can't really explain it. You just have to feel it."

Horses read body language and mood constantly, and they respond to what's real, not what we pretend. A horse doesn't care about rank, status, or what happened last week. It cares whether you're calm, present, and honest in the moment.
For many veterans, that's a rare kind of space. There's no paperwork and no one asking you to explain yourself. You brush a horse, walk beside it, and notice your breathing slow down. Trust gets built one quiet step at a time, in both directions.
That's what Kembolyn means by "you just have to feel it." The connection happens before the words do.
Veterans travel together, share lunch, and spend unhurried time with the horses at Rock Rose Ranch.
The ride up and the meal matter as much as the time in the barn. Veterans who arrive as strangers sit at the same table, swap stories, and leave as people who'll look for each other next week. Some come once. Many, like Kembolyn, make it part of their routine.
The peace they find there doesn't stay at the ranch. It comes home with them.
