Too many veterans face barriers to housing. For other veterans, staying housed requires ongoing support, connection, and resources. Depression, isolation, and uncertainty are daily battles for those without stable housing. And for unhoused veterans with pets, the barriers to finding shelter are even higher.
At Swords to Plowshares, we work tirelessly to ensure no veteran is left behind. And we can’t do it without you. You – yes, you! – can give more veterans and their pets the gift of safe, dignified housing this winter, just like Niels and Benetta once received.

Niels, a Marine veteran, and his dog, Buster, were all each other had for years. Through the hardest times, Buster was Niels’s only source of comfort and stability. In 2012, after years of homelessness, Niels and Buster finally found a home in Swords’ permanent supportive housing. Now, 12 years later, they still share the same home. “Every day, I get to love him more,” Niels shares. “We take care of each other.”

When Army veteran, Benetta, moved into Swords’ permanent supportive housing, she never thought she’d get a dog. Then she met Princess, a 6-year-old Chihuahua. “We immediately understood each other. She keeps me going, constantly following me around and being there for me when I need to talk. She has no idea how much she supports me.” For Benetta, stable housing was the first step toward healing. The second was Princess.
