Rush a year-end
gift to provide emergency shelter

Across the Bay Area, veterans are being pushed into homelessness as federal supports decline and the cost of living rises. For seniors and veterans living on extremely low incomes, stability can disappear overnight. Survival becomes a full-time job — hours spent in line for food, shelter, and basic safety.

At Swords to Plowshares, we make sure no veteran is left to face this crisis alone. Your gift provides a warm bed, daily meals, healthcare connections, and a path to permanent housing.

You can help a veteran move out of survival mode and into a safe, stable home this winter.

Meet Willard

68-Year-Old Army Veteran Rebuilding His Life

At 68, Williard lost his home due to hoarding — often a trauma-related mental health condition — and ended up sleeping outside Swords’ Oakland Veterans Center. Homelessness triggered relapse, and each day became a fight to survive.

Today, Williard is sober, employed, and working toward permanent housing. He’s rebuilding his life in a community of fellow veterans. Your generosity helps veterans like Williard find safety, healing, and a path home.

PLANNED & ESTATE GIVING

You can leave your legacy through a future gift. Here are two common ways:

Bequest: Make a planned gift in your will or living trust. This allows you continued access to your wealth while committing to support Swords’ future. You can donate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after all other provisions are specified.

Beneficiary Designation: One of the simplest ways to make a legacy gift is to add Swords to Plowshares as the beneficiary of your investment or retirement account, donor-advised fund, or life insurance policy, so that your assets at the end of your lifetime will give life and hope to veterans in need.

Cy Pres Award

Swords to Plowshares is an eligible and ideal recipient of cy pres awards in a wide variety of cases. We welcome nominations from attorneys and firms looking to direct unclaimed settlement funds to a proven, impactful nonprofit serving veterans.

Swords to Plowshares is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides transitional and permanent housing, employment services, legal assistance, therapy, and case counseling completely free of charge to veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, we advocate to increase access to justice and resources for the most vulnerable veterans, including those who:

are unhoused;

have low income, service-related disabilities, or a less than honorable discharge due to unjust policies and circumstances; or

experience PTSD and other mental health struggles.

Our Legal Services team provides free legal representation in VA benefits and discharge upgrade cases to help veterans access healthcare, education, and monetary benefits from the VA, which they earned through military service. We restore veterans’ dignity and pride in their military service, open doors to healthcare and employment access, and ensure veterans with disabilities have the income they need to achieve long-term stability.
