We invite you to attend a special presentation of our Combat to Communitytraining program. Specifically designed for educators and higher education professionals, participants will learn about the unique experiences of student veterans and practical ways to create or improve supportive practices on campus.

The program is based on Swords to Plowshares Combat to Community training, a series of accredited cultural competency curricula to teach our communities to address the challenges veterans face re-integrating into society and the unique skill sets they acquire in service.

Participants have the opportunity to attend either a morning or afternoon session, and participate in presentation, guided discussion, application exercises, and a discussion panel with student veterans.

Continuing education credit is available for MFT, LPCC, LEP, LCSW, and CAADE professionals licensed in California.

Agenda:

Part I: Combat to Community training
(9:00 AM - 11:00 AM; or 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM)

  • Learn commonly shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that often characterize service in the military.
  • Discuss how military and veteran experience, service-related injuries and disability can impact the student veteran experience.
  • Identify common challenges, lessons learned, and best practices in identifying, engaging, and supporting student veterans from real case examples.
  • Learn how to develop potential partnerships with organizations to refer student veterans and families for supportive services.
  • Participate in an application exercise that focuses on formal and informal supportive practices through the university and on campus; providing opportunities for student veteran engagement, support, community, and academic development tailored to veteran needs, academic strengths, and resources.

Part II: Discussion Panel with Student Veterans
(11:00 AM - 12:00 PM; or 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
