We punch above our weight – serving locally but advocating across California and the U.S.

In our dual role as service provider and advocate, we influence systems of care using our 50+ years of expertise. We draw from the experiences of veterans we serve to make effective, authentic impact and train community professionals to improve service delivery to veterans.

Fighting for Funding
Did you know that California is home to nearly 8% of our country’s veterans, yet funding for the California Department of Veterans Affairs accounts for only 1% of the state’s spending? Swords’ leadership visited the State Capitol to provide statements before the California State Assembly Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs where they advocated for sustainable funding streams for veteran services at the state and county levels.
April
A Seat at the Table
Governor Newsom appointed Amy Fairweather, director of policy at Swords, to the California Behavioral Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. In this role, Amy ensures veterans - who often rely on county-level systems for mental healthcare - are part of the conversation when it comes to statewide mental health resources and policy.
August
A Day of Advocacy in Sacramento
Swords joined fellow veteran services organizations to educate state legislators on the current issues facing California veterans and advocated for sustained investments to end homelessness among veterans.
October
A Congressional Visit
Mo Siedor, director of legal services at Swords, represented our work and the veterans we serve before the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, providing insight during a roundtable discussing the specific experiences and needs of veterans involved in the justice system. During the session, Mo pointed out that the challenges veterans face accessing VA care while incarcerated are similar to those of homeless veterans: “We shouldn't wait for them to be released to pay attention to their needs.”
November
Honoring Strength and Resilience
Swords’ annual Veterans Day Celebration brought together veterans, their strongest supporters, and community leaders for a night celebrating the veterans we serve and our mission ahead. We were thrilled to hear remarks from SF Mayor Daniel Lurie and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who emphasized their commitment to serving those who served.
December
Pushing for a More Accessible VA
Swords contributed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Siples vs. Collins, supporting a veteran in his fight to help himself and others receive the benefits they deserve. If the case passes in the veteran’s favor, it will set a precedent that redefines a VA standard and fixes real errors that unfairly deny veterans the benefits they need to access lifesaving healthcare and income.

“I’m grateful to be part of such an amazing team and organization advocating for veterans including myself. This day in Sacramento allowed us to advocate and show how veterans aren’t just numbers. It’s vital we advocate for wraparound services that help veterans access and maintain housing.”

Meet Cecilia, U.S. Air Force veteran

Cecilia originally connected to Swords in 2023 for help finding housing while living in her car – fast forward to 2025, she is thriving in her own home and new career. Following in our vets-helping-vets model of care,
Cecilia advocates for fellow veterans through her job as our Oakland Veterans Center Coordinator. This year, she traveled with other Swords leadership and service partners from throughout California to Sacramento to advocate for more statewide funding towards housing and mental health programs for veterans.
