Swords renovated a historically significant 1916 building in SoMa into veterans-specific housing, opening Veterans Commons in 2012. This was one of the first housing programs in the country to utilize project-based housing vouchers through a partnership between HUD and VA to house veterans; in this model, the unit itself is subsidized.
