Make a Bequest:

A bequest in your will or trust is a caring way to provide for the future of a charitable organization you support.

Planned giving/bequests

Many people feel that "estate planning" is reserved for those with substantial sums of money or assets that need to be meticulously divided among heirs. In fact, everyone-and their loved ones-will benefit enormously from some degree of estate planning.

A bequest in your will or trust is a caring way to provide for the future of a charitable organization you support. In addition to being an important legacy, a bequest offers generous tax advantages and may help your estate pass tax-free when it's settled. Besides cash gifts, you may also bequeath stocks and bonds and other property. Please consult with your attorney for details.

The following is an example of language that can be included in your will or trust and tailored to address your specific interests:

Unrestricted Bequest:

I give and bequeath to Swords to Plowshares: A Veteran Rights Organization, a not-for-profit corporation located at 1060 Howard street, San Francisco, California, for its general purposes, the sum of ____ dollars (or ____% of my residuary estate).

Donate stock:

Gifts of securities can be made in several ways.

Donating appreciated securities allows you to support Swords to Plowshares while minimizing your out of pocket costs through tax savings the donation generates. Because the value of many investments has increased significantly, you may hold assets that, when sold, will generate large capital gains taxes.

You may transfer gifts of stock to Swords without paying capital gains tax. You may also receive a charitable deduction for the value of the stock donated. Please consult with your tax advisor for details.

To donate stock please contact Swords to Plowshares' broker, Wells Fargo, at (800) 935-5747 and refer to account number 1341-2845.

  • Our federal tax identification number is 94-2260626.
    Swords DTC number is 0733.

To ensure proper acknowledgement of your stock donation, including the issuing of a receipt for tax purposes, please complete and submit the Donate Stock Form (link to PDF), which will be used for recognition purposes only. Due to the nature of electronic stock transactions, donations may not be recognized without using this form. You may fax, email or mail the form to Swords to Plowshares.

Double or Triple Your Donation:

Matching gifts from your employer can double or even triple, your donation! Ask your human resources department to see if your company participates.

Many large, and some not-so-large, employers have a matching gift program. Qualifying donations are often matched up to a pre-designated limit. What this means, for example, is a $100 donation will be matched with $100 thereby doubling the initial donation. Some employers may even have a double match making your $100 donation worth $300. Still other employers will match volunteer time with cash. Talk to your human resources department for more information and consider participating in the matching gift program. This is an easy way to make your donation go further.
