Position title
Shartsis Friese LLP Public Interest Fellow

This legal services fellowship aims to assist San Francisco Bay Area veterans who are participants in the San Francisco Veterans Justice Court, incarcerated in the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department Community of Veterans Engaged in Restoration (COVER) Project at the San Bruno Jail, designated for reentry into the community after periods of confinement, and other justice-involved veterans.

Recent estimates indicate that approximately 1 in 10 people involved in the justice system have prior service in the U.S. military. In some of these cases, symptoms of mental health conditions sustained during military service have contributed to criminal justice involvement. Obtaining treatment for mental health conditions can greatly improve these veterans’ well-being while simultaneously decreasing risks of recidivism.

  • Assist in initial claims for VA benefits
  • Appeals of VA denials
  • Applications for discharge review from the armed forces
  • Advocacy to assist justice-involved veterans in making an effective transition back to society
  • Fellows will not represent veterans in criminal proceedings

  • Demonstrated experience with, or sensitivity to, the needs of the homeless veteran population, veterans with disabilities, and/or particularly “hard to reach/hard to serve” populations
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and remain calm under pressure
  • Be committed to the mission of Swords to Plowshares and public interest work in general
  • Be a member of the State Bar of California or have sat for the California Bar Examination by the start of the fellowship
  • Sincere interest in the unique challenges facing persons under court supervision, incarcerated persons, and persons who are returning to the community after a period of confinement
  • Strong academic record
  • Superior research skills
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication skills
