Senior Program Counselor

The Senior Program Counselor is responsible for the implementation of substance abuse and mental health services and maintains assigned caseload of permanently housed veterans. This position also provides individual counseling, group counseling, case management, assessment, advocacy, outreach, and crisis intervention services.

  • Individual and group counseling for permanently housed residents, including case management, outreach, and advocacy for an assigned caseload
  • Crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution
  • Engaging residents to promote personal growth and create life plans directed towards the achievement of personal goals
  • Provide day to day support and work collaboratively with property management staff to ensure housing stability of residents
  • Develop and maintain effective interface with community resources for advocacy and linkages to services assisting residents in achieving life plan goals
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation, including progress notes and treatment plans to monitor progress towards the achievement of goals
  • Participate in weekly case conferences and meetings
  • Attend all required training to ensure individual and professional growth
  • Participate in weekly individual clinical supervision
  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or human services. License preferred
  • Combination of education and experience may be substituted
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience providing mental health, substance abuse counseling and case management services to disadvantaged or otherwise hard to reach clients
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in human service agencies
  • Thorough understanding of the problems of veterans with an emphasis on the readjustment problems of Vietnam-era veterans, such as post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse related disorders
  • Experience conducting individual and group counseling sessions regarding personality disorders, life skills and harm reduction
  • Familiarity with DSM-V and experienced in crisis intervention, client assessment including suicidal and homicidal ideation and relapse prevention
  • Familiarity with community resources in social work and human services, including substance abuse, medical and mental health resources and resources serving the homeless
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements
  • Employee must be able to carry out the essential duties of the position within what can be considered reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative
  • Writing skills to maintain case documentation and input progress notes and data
  • Basic computer skills
