Senior Program Counselor - Treasure Island

The Senior Program Counselor provides individual counseling, group counseling, case management, and assessment, advocacy, out-reach and crisis intervention. The program counselor is responsible for the implementation of substance abuse and mental health services, maintains assigned caseload of disabled single adult residents and families. This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Clinical Director for Residential Programs.

  • Provide individual and group counseling for permanent residents, including case management, outreach and advocacy for an assigned case load
  • Provide crisis intervention/de-escalation and conflict resolution
  • Engage residents to promote personal growth and create “Life Plans” directed toward the achievement of personal goals
  • Provide day-to-day support and act as a role model for support staff
  • The ability to outreach and engage with residents on site
  • Develop and maintain effective interface with community resources for advocacy and linkages to services assisting residents in achieving life plan goals
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation, including progress notes and “Life Plans” to monitor progress toward the achievement of goals
  • Provide care coordination with any external case management team as applicable
  • Participate in weekly coordination meetings with preparation of case load assessments
  • Attend all required training to ensure individual and professional growth
  • Participate in weekly individual clinical supervision
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or human services.
  • License preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree accepted with four (4) years of experience providing mental health, substance abuse counseling and case management services to disadvantaged or otherwise hard to serve clients, with at least three (3) years of experience in human service agencies
  • Experience conducting individual and group counseling regarding life skills and harm reduction
  • Understanding of the problems of veterans with an emphasis on the readjustment problems of Vietnam-era veterans, such as PTSD and substance abuse related disorders
  • Familiarity with DSM-V and experienced in crisis intervention, client assessment including suicidal and homicidal ideation and relapse prevention
  • Familiarity with community resources in social work and human services, including substance abuse, medical and mental health resources and resources serving the homeless
  • Familiarity and ability to work with diverse cultures and ethnic populations
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Employee must be able to perform essential duties within what would be considered reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Cultural Humility Initiative
