Mental Health Specialist - Veterans Commons

The Mental Health Specialist is responsible for the implementation of mental health and substance abuse services to a caseload of chronically mentally ill clients. The Mental Health Specialist provides individual counseling, group counseling, case management, intake and assessment, advocacy and referrals.

  • Provide individual psychotherapy and case management to an assigned caseload of veterans
  • Conduct groups for the veterans to help meet the needs of the community
  • Provide substance abuse and mental health treatment and referrals
  • Work in conjunction with the VA team for all veterans living within the community and those being referred for housing tenancy
  • Meet all contractual and programmatic goals
  • Complete all required program documentation, including an intake and assessment, progress notes, group notes, Individual Development Plan (Life Plan), data for in-house reports, correspondence, etc.
  • Provide backup group facilitation as needed
  • Facilitate recreational activities
  • Assist veteran to meet program goals regarding residential stability, increased skills or income, greater self-determination, connection with mainstream resources, payment of rent, and money management
  • Attend required meetings and trainings
  • Perform comparable related duties as required by management
  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or counseling
  • Clinical licensure preferred but not required
  • Minimum of two (2) years post-masters experience providing direct services to the homeless, substance abuse, and dual-diagnosed clients
  • Working understanding of the needs of homeless veterans with an emphasis on mental illness, especially PTSD and readjustment issues
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention technique
  • Knowledge and application of the DSM V
  • Ability to provide individual and group counseling
  • Ability to clinically assess dual and triple diagnosed clients
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative
  • Good listening skills
  • Overall flexibility and the ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to be a team player
  • Ability to be a role model for veterans and staff
  • Employee must be able to carry out the essential duties of the position within what can be considered reasonable accommodation
