Legal Director

The Legal Director is responsible for developing, administering, and directing Swords to Plowshares’ Legal Services Unit. The Legal Director sets unit goals and recommends improvements; develops standards for reporting, accountability, and measuring success; and makes program development recommendations to the Executive Director. The Legal Director monitors VA regulations and collaborates with other legal services providers and veterans organizations. The Legal Director makes eligibility determinations; interviews; and provides outreach, advice, and representation to claimants before the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense.

  • Provide leadership and oversight to the legal unit staff including attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants
  • Facilitate effective communication amongst legal unit team members and in collaborations with other units at Swords to Plowshares
  • Monitor regulatory and legislative developments on issues of concern to veterans
  • Serve as liaison and spokesperson on legal issues of concern to veterans at the local, state, and national level to support advocacy efforts
  • Prepare program and other reports as required by contractors, assist with audits, and perform other administrative duties related to unit goals
  • Assist Executive Director with strategic planning and resource development for the legal unit; ensure grant compliance; and work with the Resources, Development, and Communications team to develop and manage the unit budget
  • Act as liaison between Swords to Plowshares’ legal unit staff and Swords to Plowshares’ Board of Directors
  • Organize and supervise outreach to veterans, Veteran Benefits Administration and Veteran Health Administration staff, community partners, and social services agencies
  • Prepare written materials concerning veterans’ legal issues, for purposes of client self-help, attorney training, and/or public education
  • Provide direct representation, self-help information, and referrals to clients in matters before the VA and Department of Defense
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Juris doctor from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Active bar membership in the United States
  • Demonstrated experience with or sensitivity to the needs of clients who are homeless, trauma survivors, experience mental health symptoms, and/or live with disabilities
  • Managerial and supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with veteran issues
  • Familiarity with public benefits advocacy is preferred
  • Veterans strongly encouraged to apply

  • Administratively self-sufficient
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and remain calm under pressure

  • Extended periods of sitting, at a desk/computer station, meeting with clients in your office
  • Performing some tasks outside the office, such as attendance at legal clinics, meetings, hearings, or file reviews
  • Excellent critical thinking, organizational, and project management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in using technology as a management reporting tool
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative
