Intake Specialist
Description

This position assists the Program Staff with management of the Frontline Drop-In Center and reception area at the main office of Swords to Plowshares on Howard Street. The Intake Specialist works in a fast-paced reception area where up to 20 clients at a time may gather for services, and possibly more as we look to expand the scope and practice of our Drop-In services.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities and upkeep of the Intake area, including a neat lobby
  • Greet veteran clients entering the Frontline Drop-In Center in a supportive, welcoming, client-centered manner
  • Work with people experiencing homelessness, mental health symptoms, and under the influence of substances
  • Answer phones and transfer calls to agency staff
  • Assist clients with forms
  • Receives, distributes and sorts mail
  • Provide introductory information about the agency in response to queries form the public and in response to veterans seeking assistance
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, copying, faxing
  • Coordinate with janitorial, pest control, fire extinguisher, plumbing and other facility repair services when necessary
  • Assist with other support services as delegated by supervisor or Unit Director
  • Perform data entry for client related information
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions as described within what would be considered reasonable accommodation
Experience
  • Experience working in a social service setting
  • Translatable military experience and skills may be alternatively substituted
Qualifications
  • Experience working in a fast-paced office environment
  • Ability to remain calm and respectful when clients exhibit stress or anxiety
  • Working understanding of the needs of homeless veterans
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and push a large dumpster
Skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Good communication, organizational and administrative skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to operate fax/copy machine
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Cultural Humility Initiative
