At Swords to Plowshares, Human Resources (HR) is focused on understanding what people need and knowing how to provide it. As an HR Generalist, the ideal candidate is qualified and resourceful in supporting our HR department in smooth and efficient business operations. The HR Generalist will have both administrative and strategic responsibilities, helping the organization to plan and administer important functions to include but not limited to staffing, training and development, and compensations and benefits. Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and executing personnel procedures and policies and providing guidance and interpretation for the organization
  • Participate in the development of HR objectives and systems including metrics, queries, and standard reports for ongoing requirements
  • Assist in employee performance programs
  • Follow procedures and policies to improve efficiency of the HR department and the organization to improve employee experience
  • Ensure legal compliance of state and federal regulations and applicable employment and benefits laws and update policies and procedures as required
  • Perform benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, approving invoices for payments and communicating benefits information to employees
  • Provide an effective and dedicated HR advisory service to employees in relation to absence and health issues, conduct and capability, grievance matters, organizational change, and all other employee-relations matters
  • Be the primary backup for payroll processing and inputting exceptions, hourly employee validations, and benefit changes.
  • Recruit for open positions as a full cycle recruiter in support of hiring managers by gathering information, updating job descriptions, posting jobs, screening candidates, assisting in candidate selection and hiring decisions, and generating offers letters as assigned by the HR Director
  • Prepare paperwork, schedule, and facilitate new hire onboarding process and coordinating with other departments to deliver an exceptional first-day experience
  • Handle all administrative tasks for onboarding, new hire orientation, and exit interviews to include entering data into HRIS system and auditing for accuracy and compliance
  • Assist in the communication, interpretation, and upkeep of employee handbook, directory, and organizational chart, and contribute to the development of policies
  • Develop and maintain affirmative action program; files EEO-1 report annually and maintains other records, reports, and logs in compliance with EEO requirements
  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the HR department
  • Employee must be able to carry out the essential duties of the position as assigned within what can be considered reasonable accommodation
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field
Experience
  • Three (3) to five (5) years related experience
Qualifications
  • Proven qualified experience working in an HR department
  • Knowledge of HRIS Kronos system a plus
  • Knowledge of California and federal HR employment laws and regulations
  • Detail-oriented and resourceful
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and HRIS
  • Comfortable learning and using new technical systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable with working around an at-risk population, including embracing the agency’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time in an office environment and utilize standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, and smartphones; in addition to being able to lift and open files
  • Some travel required to do site visits to other Swords to Plowshares offices and housing sites

  • Excellent relationship management to include communication, interpersonal, and consultation skills

  • Resourceful, problem-solving aptitude, and thorough knowledge of HR procedures
