Employment Specialist – East Bay

The Employment & Training Program Employment Specialist is responsible for recruiting and enrolling veterans, developing recruitment and implementation plans, and community outreach and making presentations within the East Bay region. The Employment Specialist also provides assessments, case management, information and referral, and job counseling to assist veterans reintegrating into the civilian workforce. Coordination with Job Developers for job placement and/or occupational training programs in accordance with contract goals is important to this role as well as working closely with East Bay One-Stop system providers. Travel is required for this position. A successful applicant will find resonance in the mission of Swords to Plowshares.

  • Assess and counsel veterans for job readiness
  • Develop, in conjunction with participant, an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to assess barriers and identify individual participant service needs
  • Determine client eligibility for federal/state employment and training programs
  • Maintain veteran participant caseload, using case management approach
  • Make referrals to in-house services, as appropriate, including counseling on mental health issues, legal advocacy, job readiness workshops, and pre-employment training
  • Provide support services, including liaison or linkages with advocacy programs for VA benefits and other entitlements, personal counseling services, and community programs for the homeless and/or unemployed
  • Maintain concise and up-to-date client files, including required documentation and weekly case/progress notes, complete and accurate completion and execution of paperwork in a timely manner
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and prepare reports and statistical data for submission
  • Perform any other employment-related tasks as identified and delegated by the Employment Director and Program Manager
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or behavioral sciences, or an equivalent combination of college course work and experience
  • Three (3) years of experience providing vocational and/or pre-employment counseling and case management in a multi-service setting
  • Translatable military experience and skills may be alternatively substituted
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Detail-oriented, reliable, and tactful
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to interact well with people from diverse economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines while maintaining a professional composure
  • Able to prioritize and complete multiple tasks
  • Proactive, exercises good judgment
  • Knowledge of federal and state government employment programs a plus
  • Ability to articulate and facilitate presentations in a public speaking forum
  • Ability to site for prolonged periods
  • Ability to travel to perform job functions at varied sites with provide proof of auto insurance
  • Employee must be able to perform all functions of this position within what would be deemed reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Cultural Humility Initiative
