Community Counselor
Description

The Community Counselor is part of a team at a drop-in mental health social service program that provides support and services to homeless and/or disabled at-risk veterans. These services include brief counseling, information and referrals, and community resource utilization. The Community Counselor practices professional boundaries in a compassionate setting. The Community Counselor will receive in-house training in de-escalation and will at times need to utilize non-violent de-escalation tools.

Responsibilities
  • Provides a safe and supportive environment for veterans seeking services
  • Adheres to laws regarding confidentiality and reporting requirements
  • Provides assistance finding referrals for shelter and housing
  • Provides referrals for eviction prevention processes
  • Provides linkage for substance abuse issues
  • Must collaborate with Health & Social Services’ Case Managers regarding veterans’ needs
  • Assists veterans with access to public benefits, disability benefits, etc.
  • Inputs data to HM Information Systems/Efforts to Outcome to maintain required demographic information
  • Provides back-up assistance for Health & Social Services staff at front desk reception area and fills in as needed
  • Attends appropriate Department of Public Health/Behavioral Health Services trainings per DPH contract obligations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Must be able to carry out the essential duties of the position within what can be considered reasonable accommodation
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in behavioral science (social work, psychology, community studies, etc.)
Experience
  • Education and/or one-year experience working in a social service agency
  • Translatable military experience and skills may be alternatively substituted
Skills
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Problem solving skills
  • Flexible approach within a team environment
Qualifications
  • Understanding and basic knowledge of mental health symptoms, psychosocial stressors, and chemical dependency issues
  • Able to learn and maintain current information on community resources including housing, residential and outpatient treatment for mental health and substance abuse, eviction prevention, and emergency shelter
  • Able to manage the various and changing needs of multiple veterans accessing services at any one time
