Why #GivingTuesday Matters

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday are all about buying stuff.

Giving Tuesday, as its name implies, is about giving back.

A 24-hour online campaign that began in 2012, Giving Tuesday urges tech-savvy folks to make donations to their favorite charity. More often than not, you’ll see it written as #GivingTuesday — a hashtag to emphasize the shareable, clickable nature of the campaign on social media.

Last year, #GivingTuesday raised an estimated $45 million, with more than 15,000 non-profit organizations getting involved around the U.S., according to USA Today. This year, more than 30,000 nonprofits have signed on — and so have we.

For the last three decades, Swords to Plowshares has ensured that veterans are not forgotten during the holidays. Now through our #GivingTuesday “Cold Nights, Warm Hearts” campaign, we host an annual holiday meal and backpack giveaway for homeless veterans.

With #GivingTuesday 2015 underway, we encourage you to get involved. If you can’t afford to make a donation, you can still help spread the word on your social networks. Note that Giving Tuesday goes on for much longer than a single day. Many campaigns, including ours, are active through the first week of January.
