Upcoming SF Budget Cuts Could Target Veterans
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Veterans in San Francisco could be affected by possible upcoming city budget cuts. The head of the group Swords to Plowshares says his budget could be cut by $200,000. Housing and employment projects won’t be affected, but Michael Blecker says that emergency intake services will. ”We see a lot of veterans who are in chronic pain and are usually suffering tremendously from issues around substance abuse and mental health, pain and primary health care,” said Blecker. “We’re seeing a lot of younger vets as well, from the new generation of vets. Many of them have post-traumatic stress disorder.” Blecker says there are a number of vets who initially won’t go to the VA for a number of reasons. The budget, by Mayor Gavin Newsom, will be revealed next week.
