Are you an attorney who wants to give back to the men and women who served our country?

Since its founding in 1974, Swords has provided quality legal services to veterans in need of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits and military discharge upgrades. Each year, we help hundreds of veterans access the benefits they rightfully earned, but there are thousands more who need our help.

We launched the Pro Bono Program to help meet the needs of today’s veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and veterans of generations past who have been denied access to benefits. In 2011, we trained 1,000 attorneys who want to give back and will continue to reach out to the legal community in our ongoing efforts to help more veterans.

Swords to Plowshares Legal Team specializes in:

  • VA Benefits
  • Military discharge upgrades and reviews (for veterans who are ineligible for certain benefits due to receipt of less than fully honorable discharges)

Why is there a need for legal assistance?

VA benefits are not automatic, and many veterans are not aware of the benefits to which they are entitled. In addition, those veterans who did not receive fully honorable discharges may be ineligible for most VA benefits. By removing obstacles that prevent veterans from being eligible for or receiving the benefits they deserve, legal advocates play a key role in rebuilding the lives of veterans after their military service.

Applying for VA benefits is a confusing process; many veterans are unable to navigate the process alone. Proper legal assistance can mean the difference between no benefits and a lifetime of disability compensation and access to health care and other benefits.
