For several years Swords has been working to expand housing to meet the needs of Bay Area veterans and help combat the epidemic of homelessness among local vets. In fact, we are planning to increase our transitional housing program in the future to incorporate "satellite houses". Envisioned are one or more smaller group living facilities designed to provide a supportive environment in which younger veterans can work on readjustment issues while working or attending school, providing them with assistance in obtaining the life skills and support necessary for a successful transition into independent civilian living. We are currently seeking funding in order to move forward with this project and hope to find supporters who are dedicated to helping the latest era of veterans.
The facts show that it is actually more cost effective for the city and state to invest in supportive housing for the homeless population over time. Providing housing for the homeless actually decreases emergency room visits, legal processing and shelter stays, which are all paid with from public funds. For these reasons, Swords will continue to seek funding and opportunities to expand supportive housing for veterans. With continued support from the community and funders, Swords has the potential to impact so many lives and provide veterans with the resources they need to have a second chance at life.
