Writing Workshops with Mary-Rose Hayes
Swords to Plowshares is honored to have Mary-Rose Hayes contribute her time and expertise in a series of writing workshops. We will have weekly writing workshops for our women veterans as an continuation of Shout!: Celebrating Women Veterans Through the Arts.
Workshops are every Monday from 5:30 to 7:00 with light refreshments. November 28 is the last workshop before we break for the holidays with workshops to resume in January. We will update our information as soon as the dates are confirmed.

Gift Bag Giveaway

Swords to Plowshares will give out holiday gift bags to our clients. We hope to make the holidays brighter for our veterans in addition to providing our services this holiday season.
Our giveaway will take place at our Drop-In Center at 1060 Howard Street in San Francisco.

Rock Climbing/ Bay Walk and Visit to SF Zen Center

Ten years into our post-9/11 military operations and three years after the global financial meltdown, these American service members are returning from overseas deployment to a lack of jobs, diminished and imperfect government programs, and the personal scars of war.
This discussion was an opportunity to identify mutual goals and foster collaboration across the philanthropic community in support of those who have served us all.
‘What It Is Like to Go to War’ Book Signing

Swords to Plowshares hosted Karl Marlantes at the Marines Memorial Association and Hotel for a reading of his new book What It Is Like to Go to War. We were honored to have Major General Michael Myatt introduce our speaker and Mr. Marlantes read a passage from his powerful book, followed by a Question and Answer session. Mr. Marlantes was candid and thoughtful in discussing his experiences and assessment of what soldiers endure and why.

The Commonwealth Club hosted “Heart of a Soldier” which tells the story of Rick Rescorla, a military veteran who led hundreds to safety in the 9/11 WTC attacks. Our panel of insiders discussed the project’s goals, challenges and the creative process.
