Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to more than 1,500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Swords to Plowshares will accept applications for election to its Board of Directors at any time. Directors normally serve three-year terms beginning on January 1; however, to evenly distribute the expiration dates of Directors' terms, some Directors may be elected for shorter terms and in some cases terms may begin on dates other than January 1.

The members of the Board of Directors of this nonprofit corporation are expected to represent the interests of clients, donors and the public in ensuring that the organization's resources are used effectively and efficiently to carry out its missions of providing housing, job training, counseling and legal assistance to homeless and low-income veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area and advocating for veterans' rights at local, state and federal levels. All Directors are expected to actively participate in activities of the full Board and one or more Board committees, including attending at least two-thirds of (a) the full Board meetings each year (approximately seven meetings, including the annual Veterans Day Dinner), and (b) meetings of committees to which the Director is assigned. In addition, each Director is expected to participate in fundraising and to make a significant personal contribution, to act as an ambassador of the organization and its clients, to volunteer his or her time and expertise, and to lend his or her name and reputation to enhance the credibility of the organization.

Candidates must demonstrate integrity, a commitment to veterans' issues and the ability to work well with other Directors, staff and volunteers. Experience in nonprofit governance, fundraising and/or finance is highly desirable. Women, minorities and veterans - especially veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts - are particularly encouraged to apply. Part-Time Program Monitor - Treasure Island

Part-Time Program Monitor - Treasure Island


32 Hours/week

8 AM to 4PM: Saturday and Sunday

Midnight to 8 AM: Monday and Tuesday

Summary
The Part-time Program Monitor oversees the activities of residents after regular program hours, responds to emergencies and conducts crisis interventions. The Part-time Program Monitor completes appropriate documentation and works with staff to facilitate treatment and identify resident issues. The Part-time Program Monitor accompanies and supervises residents during morning or afternoon meals. Other duties include quality assurance and clerical duties.

Requirements include:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervisions.
  • Managing the program environment after regular program hours. (Shifts may include overnight or weekends.)
  • Crisis Intervention and de-escalation.
  • The ability to recognize relapse behavior
  • Documentation, i.e. Incident Reports and Log Book entries

East Bay Case Manager / Outreach Specialist

East Bay Case Manager / Outreach Specialist


Summary:

 

Under the direction of the Employment & Training East Bay Program Manager, the Case Manager / Outreach Specialist provides:  assessments, case management, information and referrals, to veterans reintegrating into the workforce with job placement and/or occupational training programs in accordance with contract goals. The CM/OS identifies and secures stable housing for homeless veterans and works closely with One-Stop system providers. The CM/OS will conduct outreach in and around the East Bay to various entities that provide services to homeless veterans.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assess & counsel veterans for job readiness.
  • Engages participant in crafting an Employment Development Plan (EDP) designed to assess barriers and identify individual participant service needs.
  • Determines client eligibility for federal/state employment & training programs.
  • Makes referrals to in-house services, as appropriate, including counseling on mental health issues, legal advocacy, job readiness workshops, and pre-employment training.
  • Provides support services, including liaison or linkages with advocacy programs for V.A. benefits and other entitlements; personal counseling services; and community programs for the homeless and/or unemployed. 
  • Maintains concise and up-to-date client files; including required documentation and case/progress notes
  • Completes accurate paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings and prepares reports and statistical data as needed for submission (Monthly Reports).
  • Performs any other employment related tasks as identified and delegated by the Program Manager.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.A. degree in Social Work or Behavioral Sciences; or an equivalent combination of college course work and experience
  • Three (3) years experience providing vocational and/or pre-employment counseling and case management in a multi-service setting. Knowledge of federal and state government employment programs, a plus.

Employment Development Specialist

Employment Development Specialist


The Employment Development Specialist conducts outreach to employers in the green industries, in order to develop lasting relationships that will lead to job placement for program graduates. In addition, Employment Development Specialist will provide pre-employment services to clients accessing the Employment & Training Services Unit. This position works closely with program staff and Project Coordinator in meeting the needs of clients through the milieu of services within the unit. Outreach activities designed to recruit potential employers in the green industry by organizing meetings with business management, Human Resource staff, Business Owners and by attending Job/Career Fairs, Green Industry Conferences and other venues as delegated by the Project Coordinator.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Assist client with pre-employment activities: One-stop Computer Access Point, resume writing, interviewing skills, job search activities (both on-line and in person), job coaching, presentation and job retention.

  • File and database management: Prepare paperwork for submission to the proper agency and MIS Administrator.
  • Maintain up-to-date client file content for accuracy and completeness.
  • Regularly review for timeliness.
  • Prepare reports and statistical data as needed for submission.
  • Facilitate pre-employment workshops for clients
  • Develops with each client an individualized placement plan of services and directs implementation of plan through completion.
  • Perform follow-ups and track all post-employment clients including: employment status, verification letters as proof of employment and job retention.
  • The Outreach component includes participation in job fairs, external presentations, trainings.
  • Develop and maintain database of recruitment sites.
  • Engages in public speaking to business and industry groups, and community and civic organizations to explain incentive programs, such as Jobs Tax Credits and other benefits employers receive from hiring veterans.

  • Meets with management of industrial and commercial enterprises to explain the social and economic advantages of hiring Veteran employees.
  • Identifies prospects and develops outreach strategies to secure new employment opportunities in the solar and water treatment/conservation industries.​ This may include phone calls, coordination of presentations and proposals, in-office presentations, direct mail campaigns, and follow up activity coordinated within that plan/​approach.​
  • Coordinates special events such as job fairs and career days.
  • Acts as a liaison between business, industry and commerce officials, VA counselor and other professional staff regarding job opportunities, labor market information, and specific job modifications, accommodations, etc. to facilitate the job placement of individual clients.
  • Prepares reports of activities and recommends additional or supplemental rehabilitation services needed to enhance an individual client's job placement readiness.
  • Conducts market research to determine which companies provide viable options for employment opportunities.
  • Maintains statistical data and provides feedback regarding successful job placements.
  • Plan, conduct, and follow up with post-placement clients and employers.  
  • Meets regularly with Project Coordinator to review/​coordinate outreach efforts to ensure continued focus and success in meeting and exceeding job placement goals.
  • Perform other employment related task as identified and delegated by the Director of Employment & Training Services.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

Possessing a Two-year college degree preferred or an equivalent combination of college course work and experience will be accepted.

 

Experience

A minimum of three (3) years experience providing direct-client services to hard-to-serve participants. 

 

Required Skills

  • Must have excellent customer services skills and have the demonstrated skills in public relations, personnel recruitment, or a closely related field. 
  • Must possess a very strong knowledge base of Internet and web resources for online job search.

This is a weekend position (Sat-Sun 8AM-4PM) located within a transitional housing program for veterans on Treasure Island. The Home Healthcare Aide provides in-home support services to frail elderly residents in a nurturing and caring manner.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

Provides elderly residents with training and assistance with personal skills and care such as:

  • Hygiene,
  • Clothing care,
  • Mobility,
  • Taking medications,
  • Managing money,
  • Meal preparation, and
  • Household maintenance

 Assists with:

  • Transportation
  • Making and meeting medical and other appointments
  • Other tasks of daily living as needed

 

Requirements:

  • Certification in elder care or other verifiable training.
  • Compassionate and patient nature.
  • Clean DMV – driving an 8 passenger van is often required.

The Case Manager serves in a drop-in mental health social service program to provide homeless and/or disabled at-risk veterans with social services such as assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, information and referral; mental health services, substance abuse intervention, benefits advocacy, outreach, and other. The Case Manager has current knowledge of community resources, including housing, residential and outpatient treatment for mental health and substance abuse, eviction prevention, emergency shelter.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides a safe and supportive environment for organization’s clientele
  • Adheres to laws regarding confidentiality and reporting requirements
  • Provides psycho-social/mental status evaluation such as gathering information to develop service and treatment goals
  • Provides supportive counseling and referrals for shelter, housing
  • Assists with eviction prevention processes
  • Assists with money management
  • Educates around symptom and medication management
  • Engages in substance abuse intervention in the areas of support around relapse prevention and linkages to outpatient/residential treatment programs

We seek qualified applicants for the position of Program Senior Counselor. The successful applicant will find resonance in the mission of Swords to Plowshares and will assume a caseload of residents located at the Swords to Plowshares Housing Program at the Academy in the San Francisco Presidio.

 

The Program Senior Counselor is responsible for the implementation of substance abuse and mental health services, maintains assigned caseload of severely and less severely impaired clients, provides individual counseling, group counseling, case management, assessment, advocacy, outreach and crisis intervention.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counseling for severely and less severely impaired residents, including case management, outreach and advocacy for an assigned case load.
  • Practice crisis intervention/de-escalation and conflict resolution.
  • Engage residents to promote personal growth and crate “Life Plans” directed toward the achievement of personal goals.
  • Provide day-to-day support and act as a role model for a case management and support staff.
  • The ability to outreach and engage with residents on site.
  • Develop and maintain effective interface with community resources for advocacy and linkages to services assisting residents in achieving treatment goals.
  • Provide leadership in the absence of the Clinical Program Manager and Academy Program Manager.
  • Provide leadership in the absence of the Clinical Coordinator.
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation, including progress notes and “Life Plans” to monitor progress toward the achievement of goals.

  • Attend all required training to ensure individual and professional growth.

Requirements:

  • MA in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or Human Services. License preferred.

  • A thorough understanding of the problems of veterans with an emphasis on the readjustment problems of Vietnam-era veterans, such as PTSD and substance abuse related disorders.
  • Experience conducting individual and group counseling sessions regarding personality disorders, life skills and harm reduction.
  • Familiarity with DSM-IV and experienced in crisis intervention, client assessment including suicidal and homicidal ideation and relapse prevention.
  • Familiarity with community resources in social work and human services, including substance abuse, medical and mental health resources and resources serving the homeless.
  • Familiarity and ability to work with diverse cultures and ethnic populations.
  • Ability to maintain current and appropriate case documentation.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements.
  • A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must be able to satisfy current HIPAA training requirements.
