The Art of War: Workshops in Trench Art

Free Workshops in Trench Art by Allison Smith

Arts & Skills Service is hosting a series of workshops on the theme of Trench Art. Trench Art is art made by soldiers and civilians with the creation and materials linked to armed conflict or its effects. Allison Smith, a SF Bay Area artist and educator, is leading these workshops with special workshops for women veterans in addition to workshops open to the public. In addition, Amber Cady and Helena Keeffe will present at the workshops with historical trench art pieces and show the skills used to make such pieces.

This is the third year of the program, revisiting a World War II collaboration between the SF MOMA and American Red Cross which provided hands-on workshops for returning soldiers by Bay Area artists and craftspeople.

The FOR-SITE Foundation and Swords to Plowshares are partnering with Allison Smith to make this year’s workshops a success. Swords to Plowshares is hosting its SHOUT! Art by Women Veterans on May 9, 2012 to continue addressing women veteran issues through art.
