GRID Alternatives began their SOLARTHON SEASON with an outstanding event in the Bayview District in San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 10th. This was Grid Alternatives’ 6th annual SOLARTHON event and it was a huge success thanks to the outstanding supporters, volunteers, homeowners and job trainees from Swords to Plowshares.
Swords to Plowshares volunteers are part of the Solar Installation, Sales and Design training being held at Laney College in Oakland. The Swords to Plowshares volunteers have completed over 300 hours of hands on and classroom time; training them for jobs in the solar industry. This volunteer opportunity gives veterans an opportunity to get hands on experience in the solar industry and put their training into practice. It is also a way for veterans to contribute to the community as they return home.
Hundreds of volunteers joined forces and successfully installed 13 solar electric systems in one day for families living on low-incomes. Each system will provide over 75% of the families’ electricity needs for the next 30 years, protecting them from rising and unpredictable energy prices. Solarthon is a great example of how we can all work together toward a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.
